the japanese studio shuhei goto architects renovated an over 40 year-old apartment and office building and repurposed it into a single family house. the site is located in a residential area close to central shizuoka city, japan.

a lot of buildings are being rebuild in the area, so it is difficult to forecast the future conditions of the environment there. to make sure the inhabitants will not be disturbed, shuhei goto created a depth between the private space and the city, as well as a sense of seclusion when inside the building.

internally, the architects created a void by demolishing half of the first floor. due to the newly installed large windows on the upper side, the gallery space became bright and full of light, where the main family space – the kitchen – is located.

every private room, on the lower and upper floors, overlooks the open living space. the void serves as a connection between the inside and the outside.
