tom sachs debuts deconstructed furniture at design miami/ for salon 94

for more than 30 years, artist tom sachs has been making one-off pieces of furniture as part of his sculptural practice. now, for the first time, sachs investigates industrialized production and presents a new collection at design miami/ 2017 for salon 94 design’s ‘curio’ — an exhibition platform which invites designers, curators, innovators and gallerists to present cabinets of curiosity throughout the fair. the series includes a side chair (with and without arms), lounge chair, and several tables in various sizes.

drawn from the traditional japanese saw horse, each piece has been milled by a robot, hand-finished and assembled in sachs’ new york studio, and brought to design miami/ for salon 94 design. ‘X-chairs’ are coated in latex paint on faces with milled lightening holes and secured with stainless steel hardware. lounges comprise a base of custom laminated maple and fir plywood, coated in latex paint on faces with milled lightning holes and vibram rubber accents. seats and backs are made from spinneybeck leather with high-density foam and down filler. variously sized tables feature tops with custom laminated fir plywood coated in polished epoxy resin, with graphite center marking and latex paint.
