ronan and erwan bouroullec design kvadrat's copenhagen showroom

the new copenhagen kvadrat showroom designed by ronan and erwan bouroullec opened its doors in november. beside the showroom spaces, the designers, together with kvadrat, created a series of visionary products such as the ‘ready made curtain’, roller blinds, several textiles, and a rug.

‘the concept we developed is focused on materiality, which is at the heart of the kvadrat brand’, says erwan bouroullec. ‘for instance, the showroom aims to deliver total flexibility to create scenes with large pieces of textiles and rugs. doing so provides a deep insight into the weave, weight, transparency and quality of each design’.

the showroom is located close to an industrial harbor, and large windows flanking three sides of the building provide panoramic view towards the centre of the city. the space is divided by two parallel brick walls topped with transparent glass screens. the bright and airy gallery has an office area on one side, and a shelving for textiles and rugs on the other. the fabrics are displayed on a heavy-duty shelving and hanging system, which is fixed on a tailored gridded track-ceiling. due to the special structure of the system, the space can be completely cleared or, alternatively, present installations.

reflecting the brand’s collection, the finishes of this space project a strong sense of materiality, volume and tactility. in addition to the glass and brick walls, there are natural oak and concrete surfaces, and desks made from really solid textile boards. to bring the collection to focus, white is the dominant color in the showroom, and black is also used to stand in contrast to the white.

most of the furniture is custom-made, while some was initially designed by bouroullec studio for VITRA. the studio’s tiles designed for mutina are used in the bathrooms, and the seating in the showroom is all upholstered with kvadrat’s ‘basel’ and ‘hallingdal 65’.
