'3beirut' by foster + partners is a limestone-clad residential development in lebanon

foster + partners has completed ‘3 beirut’, a sustainable residential and retail development that responds directly to the culture of beirut, lebanon. the project strengthens the city’s role as a center for tourism, commerce, retail and entertainment, while also providing new green spaces at ground level. three limestone-clad towers are animated by a ground plane of shops, cafés, restaurants, a fitness center, an art gallery, and public gardens.

the development is located in beirut’s central district, and forms part of a wider masterplan intended to regenerate the city center. foster + partners focused heavily on public programing within the design through the creation of new pedestrian routes in addition to new landscaped spaces that connect the historic center to the harbor. on the south side, the central tower has been pushed back to create a landscaped forecourt. luke fox, head of studio and senior executive partner at foster + partners, remarked, ‘we are delighted that 3beirut has reached completion, which is the result of close collaboration between the client and foster + partners. the result is a high-quality building that gives back to the city.’

the northern façades feature glazed windows, providing spectacular views of the harbor. meanwhile, the south side includes terraces and green roofs that integrate the towers into the urban grain. the staggered layout of the towers also helps avoid apartments that overlook adjacent units, creating more private spaces. residents began moving in earlier in 2017, with over 75% of the apartments already sold. a wide range of amenities, including a leisure suite, pool and gym, and even a mclaren car showroom have also been inaugurated.
