jacques ferrier wraps rouen metropole headquarters in glass scales

jacques ferrier architecture has designed the headquarters of métropole rouen normandie, located on the banks of the seine in rouen, france. the building contains work spaces, a roof terrace, and public areas that serve as an extension of an eco-park that will eventually surround the site. the dynamic profile of the structure stands out among the buildings on the major port, acting as the figurehead for the future district.

the design is characterized by a multi-faceted, transparent façade which changes color throughout the day. reflecting the tones of the sky and the surrounding water, the building appears to be covered in fish-like ‘scales’ made of glass. the changing hues are a modern interpretation of claude monet’s many paintings of rouen cathedral. the glass scales also serve a functional purpose as the double layered façade provides the building with passive thermal protection. on the roof, the scales make way for solar panels that provide a considerable contribution to the building’s energy self-sufficiency.

the building’s roof contains a large terrace, offering a panoramic view over the city and river. the brightly lit offices are spread throughout the building, while patios within create additional terraces accessible to visitors. from the architects: ‘designed with the aims of efficiency and comfort, the building is both innovative and exemplary in nature’.
