as the first contemporary rattan collection, expormim’s ‘fontal’ by oscar tusquets blanca has continuously been one of the brand’s best-selling ranges. with the sweeping, sculptural and structural lines of the wood, the designs have become a classic, where minimal, light form meets expressive character and charm. the original furniture collection, which includes a dining chair and low armchair, was introduced in 2012.

as a key essence of the expormim brand, the ‘fontal’ collection has been rejuvenated to meet the modern day by building upon its heritage and artisanal craftsmanship with flexibility. where once only the seats were available to be upholstered, the designs now offer a vast new, exciting range of customization options. the seats, as well as the backrests, of the chairs can adorn a variety of differently colored and textured fabrics, such as leather and velvet. furthermore, the collection has been expanded with low and high stools.

expormim is famed for their innovative working of rattan, but for many years this was all but forgotten. the brand have been manufacturing the raw material for more than 50 years, since its foundation in the 1960s. however, there was a period when the substance was unfavourable and was out of fashion. cue the design of spanish architect, painter and designer oscar tusquets blanca, whose furniture collection’s name derives from ‘fuente’ which means to ‘source’ in spanish. as he explains, ‘expormim had decided to return to its origins, to rattan and to that technical know-how historically kept by local craftsmen’ and that was the birth of the ‘fontal’.

‘the project is born from the wish to recover rattan as a fine material and reclaim our country’s rich craftsmanship tradition. I have tried to give a new look to an ancient technique replacing the brackets and bonds traditionally used as connecting elements by the twinning of one cane to the next. thanks to this innovative solution we have achieved a strong, flexible and lightweight structure. this is how ‘fontal’ evolved into a warm, likeable and luxurious seat in the true sense of the word‘ concludes tusquets.
