for the 2017 edition of maison & object in paris, jasper morrison and wataru kumano collaborated to create ‘stool’ in celebration of the 10th anniversary of more trees — an organization focused on forest conservation.

‘stool’ has been presented outside of teamlab’s ‘blossoming green tea‘ digital art installation at M&O 2017. the exhibit was created in collaboration with en tea — a newly launched green tea brand from the hizen province of japan. visitors to the installation and café space — called ‘green tea from forest’ — were invited to sit on the stools and drink individually crafted tea beverages.

more trees was founded in 2007 by composer and musician ryuichi sakamoto to promote forest growth and conservation — not only in japan, but around the world. the organization enters the design conversation at maison & objet paris in partnership with teamlab and en tea, through morrison and kumano’s design.

in a time of great urban expansion, forested areas are often placed in jeopardy. more trees seeks to promote products that utilize local japanese wood so that materials, that would otherwise go to waste, are utilized and serve a productive function for humanity. ‘stool’ is exclusively produced using hinoki, japanese cypress — directly sourced from higashi shirakawa, gifu, in japan.
