denis esakov's aerial photography features the work of OMA, hadid, and adjaye

in denis esakov’s moscow photo series, buildings designed by some of the world’s leading architects — including OMA, zaha hadid, and david adjaye — are revealed from a new, experimental angle. straying away from the traditional angles of observation, esakov uses a drone to reveal, what he calls, a building’s ‘fifth façade’ — the view from above.

architects, urban designers, and pedestrians see the same building from myriad of perspectives, creating different perceptions of the same structure. in these photos, compiled in his book titled ‘spying on moscow,’ the city’s ‘fifth facade’ becomes the source in which we form our new perspective of europe’s largest metropolis. esakov‘s viewers are able to personally experience the artist’s carefully curated journey through the city.

for each of the featured building, the artist includes two aerial photos and one from ground level — easing the transition between our traditional perspective of an edifice and it’s ‘fifth facade.’ both traditional and modern examples are included, which successfully take on new geometric forms in a new realm of aesthetic — free of traditional, architectural photography‘s formal guidelines.
