DANstudio suspends tree-filled 'balconies' from the façade of a private house in hanoi

vietnamese practice DANstudio has designed a dwelling in hanoi that features tree-filled balconies suspended above the street below. as with many new residences in vietnam, the main structure of ‘TH house’ was already complete, however a great deal of work was still required before the buyer could move in. as the home’s original design compromised natural daylight and ventilation, the architects began by altering the building’s interior configuration.

to create more vertical connections between storeys, DANstudio reworked the floorplates to include two internal ‘tubes’ that bring ventilation and light deep inside the property. the new configuration also means that residents have more freedom to interact physically through these open spaces. meanwhile, the consistent use of a monochrome tile, which runs between floors, helps establish a visual continuity.

the dwelling is located in close proximity to a noisy railway line, while its front elevation receives direct heat from the midday sun. in order to counteract these factors, the architects developed a system of aluminum screens with protruding ledges that contain small trees and other greenery. other recently completed projects in vietnam include a yoga studio clad with curved yin-yang tiles and a quirky house with asymmetrical windows.
