Aedas‘ ‘unilever headquarters’ opened this june in jakarta, indonesia as part of BSD green office park complex — the country’s first green office district. the project is designed with three key elements of indonesian culture in mind — community, diversity, and nature. this follows Aedas’ overall design mission, to blend aspects of european heritage within a given cultural context. the scheme contains both designated spaces for private, individual work and group collaboration, appealing to a variety of potential visitors and enforcing a sense of community and collaborative spirit.

Aedas’ overall plan alludes to the traditional design of an indonesian village, containing areas that mimic the function of a ‘square’ and connecting ‘streets.’ the ground floor is dedicated to fulfilling the needs of the public audience and includes a religious center, fitness center, dining areas, and a multi-purpose space. these interior spaces flow freely into exterior green pockets and landscaped decks — forms created by undulations in the aluminum blade louvers on the facade. this system, along with the building’s curtain wall, help to provide shade and maintain a comfortable interior temperature, while simultaneously maximizing the amount of natural light entering the space.

the building’s four main wings are connected by ‘squares’ or ‘piazzas,’ which create localized meeting points and foster the sense of community activity. cohesion throughout the connected, interior spaces is cultivated through the use of native indonesian textiles, materials, and images. this re-enforces Aedas’ main objective — to create a valuable space that embraces the needs of the local community with a design that prominently features aspects of indonesian culture and local craft.
