nick misani's illustrated typographic mosaics take you on a trip around the world

while these typographic mosaics may look like a decorative floor straight out of a wes anderson film, their actual material might surprise you. ‘fauxsaics’ are digital illustrations, crafted in the computer by new york-based designer and letterer nick misani. created through a similar process used for real mosaic tiling, the colorful collection of graphics is bound by the same limitations and techniques that determine the crafted composition of their physical counterparts.

the highly-realistic, digital typographic mosaics commemorate misani’s travels across the world. letterforms and color palettes are influenced by each location, drawing from the patterns and motifs found in different cities and communities. san diego, for example, is patterned with a tableau of pale pink, palm-like trees, reminiscent of a hazy californian sunset. london follows an orderly grid of black and white squares, while santo domingo takes on a fanned formation of red and grey.  ‘for a long time, I’ve been obsessed with lettering, interior design, and decorative arts,’ misani says. ‘so mosaics — as an intersection between these three passions — have always been fascinating to me.’
