UM project's conductive wallpaper hardwires your home from the outside in

UM project has teamed up with new york wallpaper company flavor paper on the ‘conduct’ project, presented at collective design fair during NYCxDESIGN 2017. ‘conduct’ takes the idea that to control items on the outside of walls, we use wires hidden away inside them. the collaboration turns this tradition inside out, doing away with the idea of embedding wires within walls and instead using conductive inks to create circuitry that is at once beautiful and functional. 

the installation — debuted at collective design fair during NYCxDESIGN — uses the conductive wall covering to connect five conceptual electrical objects: a lamp, a fan, a speaker, a light box and a hinged mirror. simply by touching the copper dots on the wall, a person uses their body to complete the electricity circuit and in turn, the devices jump into action.

UM project — whose name is an acronym for user and maker — stays true to its philosophy of creating designs that are at once precise, purposeful, and sometimes playful. the ‘conduct’ installation plays with both 2D and 3D elements to create a novel and immersive experience. together with flavor paper, UM project points towards a use for conductive, water-based inks that although principally displayed as art, could one day be used as a functional wallpaper.
