MM++ architects uses local materials to build tropical holiday homes in vietnam

in vietnam, MM++ architects has completed a pair of holiday houses that seek to exist in harmony with their tropical surroundings. the residential retreats are situated on a long and narrow plot in trà vinh, a provincial city in the south of the country. in order to integrate the homes with their surroundings, the design recalls the region’s vernacular architecture with woven sliding panels and locally sourced materials.

the client for the project is a three generation family, who commissioned MM++ architects to design a holiday home that catered to their specific requirements. as each generation of the family had a different lifestyle, it was decided to divide the scheme into two separate structures. between the two properties, a centrally positioned courtyard serves as a communal space for all residents, containing a swimming pool alongside an outdoor kitchen.

the holiday houses seek to exist in harmony with their tropical surroundings

the two buildings were positioned to minimize their impact on the site, meaning that all existing trees could be retained. the built area has also been reduced to a minimum, totaling just 140 square meters (or approximately 1,500 square feet). large windows on the ground floor provide a constant connection with the natural environment, while the upper storey is entirely wrapped with fixed and openable woven panels.

the two-storey retreats are situated on a long and narrow plot 

as well as external space for two parked cars, the ground floor contains living accommodation for both dwellings. meanwhile, the upper levels comprise three bedrooms each. the structures are topped with palm leaves, which form an external layer of insulation, while woven timber panels have been used for the buildings’ façades as well as the cabinetry partitions found inside the home.
