located at the foot of the kennemer dunes in a new residential development in the netherlands, the 123dv-designed cloud 9 villa offers a private residence geared to take full benefit of the sandy, forested landscape. the home is organized over three floors, the basement level conceals a wood-clad garage door and mechanical room; the living, kitchen, and dining area exist on the ground level with the private bedrooms elevated on the second floor above.  a palette of natural materials was chosen to match the varied nature of the surrounding duned environment, stone masonry walls make up much of the ground level, facing an opaque partition to the main street interrupted by a single window and door. the volume above, taking on its own form that cantilevers slightly beyond the supported structure below is clad in vertically-oriented timber planks that create a homogeneity in the facade and allow for the soft bends at wall transitions. operable louvered portions of the exterior wall serve as bi-fold awning windows that help control views and natural light.

at the back of the site facing the the private garden area, the otherwise opaque facades are broken into large curved panes of glass that open the interior to the exterior. 123dv designed the ground floor to spill out onto a large concrete patio which gives way to the expansive yard beckoning the social functions to take full advantage of the outdoors. the upper level features large louvered walls that filter direct light inside and cantilever to provide shade to the lower level. the interior features an open plan layout with custom furniture that subdivides spaces while serving as multi-functional fixtures. a central wall containing storage, a media wall, and curved void separates the living room from the dining area allowing a visual connection between the two and serving as a seating area. the house is also fully automated with the lighting and internal blind systems controlled from an ipad which further help with a smart system that controls ventilation and light lending to maximum energy efficiency.
