lantavos projects breaks down single rectangular volume to create greek house

a geometric character is highlighted in the all-white building belong to a family home located in the settlement of kampos, at the cycladic island of paros, greece. the physical presence of the house is enhanced by the rural, mediterranean landscape that surrounds it, consisting of small vineyards, olive groves, and cereal fields.

the building’s form derives from the decomposition of a single rectangular volume as a point of startup and the formation of an enclosed veranda protected by the strong northern winds. the removed volume has been placed on the terrace of the building and used as an independent studio or relaxation space. from the rooftop, unobstructed views are offered towards the pounta area and antiparos island.

developed by lantavos projects –who also completed this restaurant interior in athens back in 2015– their design process of the dwelling focuses on avoiding any attempt of sterile representation of traditional elements or decorations. instead, the architects focused on the habitation archetypes of the island, given through the views of contemporary living. the house caters to the five-member family throughout the year and not just during holidays. the two rectangular ground floor volumes slightly recede to reveal part of the internal veranda, and conceivably marks the entrance into the house. most activity occurs in the ground floors with the first containing the common areas while the second the private rooms.
