photographer miguel de guzmán has taken new images of ‘160 east 22nd street’, a residential building in new york that boasts an unusual 24 foot (7.3 meter) cantilever. located in the city’s gramercy park neighborhood, the distinctive 21-story tower has been designed by S9 architecture and contains a total of 84 condominium residences. in addition to the luxury dwellings, the structure also includes ground floor retail outlets.

at its sixth floor, the building dramatically cantilevers above a neighboring three-storey structure, who sold its air rights to the developers behind 160 east 22nd street. ‘the design is based on a modern interpretation of the elegant and timeless classic pre-war apartment buildings in the neighborhood,’ says S9 architecture. ‘the limestone clad building’s massing is sculpted to incorporate a 24’ cantilever, and punctuated with alternating deep set fenestration pattern.’

elsewhere, the building is deliberately restrained, with large windows set into the limestone façade. ‘the interior is comprised of classical proportions and contemporary character,’ continue the architects. ‘a well-balanced variation of noble materials and details throughout the building creates a sleek style with a touch of luxury vintage, all executed by local craftsmen.’ the building, which opened to residents in 2014, is now sold-out.
