chicago architecture biennial 2017 announces participants

the chicago architecture biennial (CAB) has announced the list of international architecture firms and artists who will participate in its second edition, titled ‘make new history’. more than 100 creatives representing over 20 countries will be present at the event, which will take place september 16, 2017 – january 7, 2018. among the architecture firms displaying work are SANAA, j. mayer h, francis kéré, and urbanus, while postmodern artist james welling will also be presenting a project.

this year’s artistic directors sharon johnston and mark lee, of LA–based firm johnston marklee, selected the participants who will present their work at the chicago cultural center, as well as additional sites across the city. ‘our goal for the 2017 chicago architecture biennial is to continue to build on the themes and ideas presented in the first edition,’ explains lee. ‘we hope to examine, through the work of the chosen participants, the continuous engagement with questions of history and architecture as an evolutionary practice,’ adds johnston.

‘the city of chicago is proud to host new projects by architects, artists and designers from around the world with the 2017 chicago architecture biennial,’ explains chicago mayor, rahm emanuel. ‘we are pleased to announce another outstanding lineup of work and perspectives to build on the success of the inaugural 2015 edition. not only will the breadth of work represented by designers from around the world showcase the future of architecture, but it will also further reinforce chicago’s stature as a global city.’

‘this year’s list of participants was carefully chosen to showcase the future of architecture and design rooted in history,’ says todd palmer, executive director of the chicago architecture biennial. ‘through presenting a variety of work, we aim to give visitors of all kinds, from leaders across the global architecture community to the interested traveler, an in-depth look at architecture as we know it today, and the chance to be inspired by how architecture is making new history in cities around the world.’

more than 530,000 chicago residents and visitors took part in CAB 2015 — the largest international exhibition of contemporary architecture ever to have taken place in north america. the chicago cultural center, operated by chicago’s department of cultural affairs and special events, will once again serve as the anchor of the exhibition, with additional sites across the city. the opening of the 2017 chicago architecture biennial will align with the sixth annual EXPO CHICAGO, the international exposition of contemporary and modern art, which will run september 13–17, 2017 at navy pier. see the full list of CAB 2017 participants below.

the second edition of the chicago architecture biennial (CAB) is the largest architecture and design exhibition in north america, showcasing the transformative global impact of creativity and innovation in these fields. this year’s biennial features over 141 practitioners from more than 20 countries addressing the 2017 theme ‘make new history.’ artistic directors sharon johnston and mark lee have selected architects and artists whose eye-opening creations will invite the public to explore how the latest architecture can and will make new history in places around the world.

CAB is hosted by the chicago department of cultural affairs and special events at the historic chicago cultural center. the ‘make new history’ exhibition extends to off-site locations and is amplified through six community anchor exhibitions in the neighborhoods and two special project sites — plus installations, performances, talks, films, and more hosted by over 100 local and global cultural partners.

the main exhibition is free and open to the public from september 16, 2017 through january 7, 2018.
