the ‘street tracker’ custom motorcycle is a well-balanced electric bike that cuts a similar silhouette to the classic yamaha ‘SR400’. created by china-based custom bikeshop shanghai customs, it successfully combines retro design cues with strong battery performance.

shanghai customs noticed from the beginning of the proect that the electric motorcycle market is littered with uninspiring contemporary-sportsbike forms, or classic-bicycle forms, with zero room to maneuver. the ‘street tracker’ aims to bridge this gap by offering innovative technology inside its familiar 1978-inspired shape. featuring a 72 V 80 amp lithium-ion battery, paired with a 5000 W hub-mounted motor, the motorcycle can travel for 250 km, at speeds up to 140 km/h.

the custom bikeshop started by designing the motorcycle’s frame, and having it made in a factory based in chongqing. while that was happening, a second factory modified a retro swing-arm for the hub motor’s axle. upon completion it was sent to a motor factory, so engineers could adapt a 5000 W motor to fit the frame perfectly. with the motorcycle’s ‘heart’ now ready to bring it to life, its motor was paired to an 18” steel rim. the bike’s custom controller can be programmed with an android app simply, which also provides its performance information. the batteries are the same as those used in hybrid-electric cars and tip the scales at 55 kg.

an elegant tank covering the top of the battery is crafted from lightweight sheet metal. adding to its performance capabilities, its side panels are also made of sheet metal and mesh, adding curvature to the overall silhouette while protecting the electrical components. sitting beside an older naturally-aspirated bike the shanghai customs ‘street tracker’ is just as attractive, and is rumored to be entering production soon.
