just a few days before the academy awards, shutterstock has released its annual collection of pop! reimagined movie posters. now a thing of tradition, the 2017 collection is shutterstock’s fifth series, which each involves reworking the site’s millons of stock photographs into alternative movie posters for the year’s best picture nominees.

the tradition challenges the image website’s team of in-house designers to reinterpret the nine nominated films for the best-picture category as a work of pop art, based on the style of an artist who inspires them. the designers each have at their disposal shutterstock’s collection of over 100 million images to collage into a new creation.

each designer analyzes the classic aesthetics of each artist, along with the storyline of the year’s leading films in order to produce an alternate movie poster influenced by the likes of andy warhol or roy lichtenstein. each new poster provides an intimate understanding of each film’s plot and characters, as well as the designer’s personal understanding of the movie. this year’s collection of posters includes a recreation of ‘la la land’ in the style of eduardo paolozzi and ‘hell or high water’ in the trademark aesthetic of robert rauschenberg.

shutterstock’s chief marketing officer jeff weiser elaborates on the works, explaining that ‘the annual Oscar Pop! poster series is an opportunity to flex our creative muscle and make something beautiful that not only celebrates the talent of Hollywood, but also highlights the work of our 160,000 contributors around the world. this year, the nominations mix spectacle and emotion, making them the perfect source material and resulting in a fun, thought-provoking, and unique series that offers a fresh take on the leading films.’ the full collection is available to view on shutterstock’s website, along with explanations of the works by each designer.
