brunno jahara and ana voss craft contemporary objects + accessories from woven straw

‘paleae brasilis’ is a collection of objects and fashion accessories born from a collaboration between designers brunno jahara and ana voss, originally presented at maison et objet 2017 and forthcoming at milan design week 2017. living in the tropics, in the city of rio de janeiro, the two artists created the pieces with the desire to give value to a natural and universal material — straw — so much used by the native tropical people.

called ‘paleae brasilis’, latin for ‘brazilian straw’, the pieces are meant both for the home and for day to day fashion. caps, fruit bowls, sandals, luminaires and more are all created using the humble material, demonstrating an intricate level of craftsmanship and decorating each piece with the labyrinthine pattern of interwoven strands. at times whimsical and mature, the collection demonstrates the versatility of the material as a means of creating, and its relevance and mature bearing in a variety of contexts.

‘the process of creating together enriches each part of the result and transposes disciplines with a common material’, explains the duo. brunno jahara has opted to draw structures in solid brass to protect and keep safe the straw shapes, where custom made baskets become hanging lamps and table lights that use LED technology to create palm shade effects.

ana voss meanwhile lends a new perspective to beachwear staples — shoes, hats and peaked caps are all crafted from the natural material, fusing the woven strands with smaller details realized in leather and golden brass. originally shown as part of 2017’s maison et objet, the collection will be presented once more at the 2017 milan design week. pieces are available to purchase at le bon marché in paris and online through the specimen editions website.
