jenny sabin has been announced as the winner of MoMA PS1’s 2017 young architects program. the summer pavilion, titled ‘lumen’, has been designed to evolve, providing respite from the sun during the day, and emitting an ethereal glow after sundown. the design is made of tubular structures in a lightweight knitted fabric, with a canopy of recycled, photo-luminescent, and solar active textiles that absorb, collect, and deliver light.

serving as a ‘temporary urban landscape’, jenny sabin studio’s design will be sited in the MoMA PS1 courtyard for the 20th season of the institution’s warm up music series. opening on june 29, and on view throughout the summer, an integrated misting system will respond to the proximity of visitors, activating fabric stalactites that intend to produce a ‘refreshing micro-climate’.

jenny sabin’s catalytic immersive environment, ‘lumen’, captured the jury’s attention for imaginatively merging public and private spaces,’ says sean anderson, associate curator in MoMA’s department of architecture and design. ‘with innovative construction and design processes borne from a critical merging of technology and nature to precise attention to detail at every scale, ‘lumen’ will no doubt engage visitors from day to night in a series of graduated environments and experiences.’
