in response to the hectic life of the city, the ‘tokyo classic forest clubhouse’ forms a natural escape in japan’s chiba prefecture. completed by furuya design, its forested location presented a large plot for the architects to construct a clubhouse building, along with a stable for horse riding.

the two resulting constructions by shunichi furuya and masato aki of furuya design were based on the client’s desire to open a country club where people could spend their leisure time outside of tokyo. positioned within the trees, the stable and arena are located on the west side of the road, while the clubhouse is on the east surrounded by oak trees.

the clubhouse is structured with a timber grid frame with the programs located inside a recessed glass volume. the architects intended to create a transparent structure in the woods offering a shop, child daycare facilities, a restaurant, workshop and relaxation opportunities. the skeleton frame imitates the grid of the planted oaks trees and the diameters of their trunks, and this led to the building being structured with a 4 meter square grid and 30 cm square concrete pillars.

the stables, the equestrian part of the project, were designed to place the comfort of the horses as the focus. the building faces southeast and adopts a semi-open european-style aesthetic with 20 stalls of 3m x 3.6m. the grass-covered roof enables the insulation and the continuation of the landscape from the adjacent golf course.
