in response to the lush surrounding vegetation, comfortable annual temperatures and the presence of two neighboring mountains, cadaval & solà-morales has constructed a private residence named ‘MA house’ on the outskirts of tepoztlán, mexico.

the defining feature of the monolithic dwelling is its construction material: stone. the decision from cadaval & solà-morales came from the fact that stone exists on site, and can be sourced locally. additionally, the need for little maintenance and its low cost were further reasons MA house has resulted in its size and material expression. meanwhile, the large and sunny site influenced the planning of the light-filled internal spaces. each side is open to the landscape in some way, and a patio cuts through the center of the dwelling to serve as a pathway through from the front to the rear. this ‘crack’ defines the central circulation.
a distinctive feature of the property is its circulation that takes place on the outer perimeter. this has led to a succession of spaces with different uses that define the outer limit, a generic geometrical square. planned as three pavilions unified by a unique roof, this generates the two covered patios. the canopy is continuous, and rests on top of the structural stone walls.
the main communal space features a full glass frontage facing the mountains
another bedroom has been placed on the mezzanine level
the project includes a sequence of open and enclosed spaces
the expansive house provides ample space for lounging and resting
the use of stone and concrete is continued internally
the open terrace is a breezy spot for residents to sit and enjoy the landscape
the stone was sourced locally from the surrounding area
the definition of a central and open patio, is a void that defines the home’s access
the home is located 60 kilometers from mexico city
