soup stock, a chain of soup serving restaurant founded by masamichi toyama (read our interview here) in tokyo has opened a branch in the nakameguro district. the interiors by ninkipen! have been designed to reflect the bustle and scenery of the surrounding neighborhood. the simple and clean design of the restaurant uses subtle material contrasts and artwork to define the interior which is on full view through the large glass frontage.

throughout soup stock’s build up, ninkipen!‘s intention was for the decoration to ‘look like soup’. for example, the bespoke terrazzo design on the floor references the ingredients of the soups; carrots, potatoes, or broccoli being spilled onto the floor. with this, the studio mixed various kinds of stones into the grey-yellow mortar to create the speckled effect of the terrazzo flooring. in addition, quirky details including a chestnut wood pillar, a ladder and a huge balloon wedged between two concrete pillars are used to energize the space.
