50 miles west of los angeles, where malka architecture has opened its new studio, this proposed residence is embedded into the steep cliffs of point mugu. the scheme — titled ‘mugu house’ — takes advantage of the site’s steep topography with a design that sits lightly on the landscape. the property is immersed in the natural environment, coexistent with both its vegetation and thermal variations.

stéphane malka’s lightweight design intends to use prefabricated concrete in its construction. locally available materials, such as sand and aggregate, would be combined with a very low cement content (7%) in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by a factor of 28 in comparison to traditional concrete. this method results in a quick and sustainable installation, as well as potential removal.

the terrain determines the geometry of the house

a double skin façade, composed of removable triangular units, includes a system of wooden sunscreens laid out in a traditional tribal pattern. the mountainous landscape extends within each room, determining the geometry of the interior spaces and reminding inhabitants that they are at one with nature. large windows present sweeping views of the pacific ocean.

the mugu house embodies a return to the roots of architecture in connection with the natural elements, a dialogue with the mountain and its troglodyte architecture,’ explains the design team. ‘the architecture links both nature and history, sustainability and territory. the house revisits the original shelter’s myth with a vernacular dialogue with the mountain, and embodies a return to the roots of the american continent.’
