solarwave 64 catamaran luxury solar powered yacht: solarwave from switzerland has teamed with NEDSHIP group in creating a series of solar-powered yachts, now available in 54, and 64 foot derivatives. having spent over five years testing the solar-technology, the first ‘solarwave 64’ is finally voyaging and redefining ecotourism. the vessel combines a carbon composite hull design with a solar energy system to create a luxurious 64 foot catamaran that produces zero-emissions when cruising.

contrary to conventional hybrid-yachts, the components of the ‘solarwave 64‘ are configurated for long-range solar-cruising. powered by solar-energy only, this removes the need to start the diesel-engine as battery-capacity is predetermined for more than one night of permanent cruising. in rare cases, where the sun does not shine for several days, a range-extender offers a safe and reliable power-source, guaranteeing fully-charged batteries and removing weather dependency. from the moment the sun shines again, the batteries are recharged for free, silently. this represents a considerable financial benefit, and enhances passenger comfort.

power: 2 x ‘D3 volvopenta’ 220 ps diesel engines – >20 knots

solarwave yachts say this isn’t of a ‘mild-hybrid’ with a range of 10 miles at 4 knots, but a solar-hybrid with unlimited range and speeds of more than 10 knots–plus electric motors. the ‘power’ model also carries two ‘D3 volvopenta’ 220 ps diesel engines providing adding over 20 knots of power to the solar-power-supply. upon special request ‘solarwave’ can also feature sails, creating a juxtaposition between innovative nautical-technology and traditional sailing methods.
