east meets west in seletti's hybrid collection by CTRLZAK

maison et objet: in 2011, CTRLZAK and seletti presented us with their first take of the ‘hybrid collection’, a set of tableware motivated by the contrast and meeting points between eastern and western porcelain decorations. the collection reflects on the historical production of these traditional objects — including plates, bowls, mugs and cups —by sliding in half each one and then joining them, creating new hybrids that juxtapose scenes and themes interpreted in the respective cultural imaginary.

over the years, the ‘hybrid collection’ has seen a lot of success, which has led CTRLZAK to move forward with it, adding a new set of rugs that follow the same concept and aesthetics presented during maison et objet in paris.

‘the hybrid project originates through a research on the history of porcelain and its centuries of cross-fertilization between western and eastern aesthetics,’ tells CTRLZAK to designboom on their latest addition to the collection. ‘getting deeper and deeper in our research we realized that this was a phenomenon that was expressed in diverse fields of cultural expressions and rug design was an important one throughout modern history. rugs always represented a piece of somebody’s home and the themes depicted on them were people’s way to recreate their surroundings through their tradition. the rugs presented explore classic themes of western & eastern culture in a new  genre predicting our hybrid future.’

‘I have always loved a challenge! and I have always felt that with seletti we could experiment with products and categories more than any other brand. in fact, it is what we always did: 10 years ago we took a chance with estetico quotidiano and we developed a great collection which is still a success; not to mention how much we have experimented in the lighting sector, last but not least with the monkey lamps and the mouse lamps,’ comment stefano seletti, seletti’s art director.

‘I love rugs myself and being the art director of seletti allows me also to work on things that I personally like following my passion and my tastes. when we developed the first rugs last year with toiletpaper it was a hazard and it went very well,’ continues stefano seletti. ‘as rugs, they were very different from what people usually expect and the hybrid collection is another unique interpretation of this category. looking at the patterns and decorations CTRLZAK used for their porcelain plates it came naturally to me to think about rugs. maison&objet is the perfect place to present such items, as this fair is the most interesting for home decoration.’
