jarring jewelry and brain-bending anatomical accessories look like body glitches

blending body art and wearable design, artist nadja buttendorf adds a jarring element of surprise to jewelry with her collection of ‘fingerrings’, ‘EARrings’ and ‘skin’ necklaces. each of the silicone sculptures has been carefully crafted by hand to mimic the texture and tactile qualities of skin, appearing hyper-realistic when worn. 

for the ‘fingerrings’, buttendorf has sculpted a replica of a human ring finger that can be easily attached to the hand. when worn, the faux-appendage appears as a strange, ‘6th finger’ that extends from the body, seamlessly integrated into the human body. similarly, the ‘EARrings’ have been designed in silicone in the shape of a human ear and are worn as actual earrings. the wearer appears to have a duplicate ear hanging from their existing lobe. a series of ‘skin necklaces’ complement the collection of wearable artworks — the unique accessories are made in different shades of skin, and take on the unusual form of a thick gold chain. 

buttendorf tells the creators project that her work intends to probe questions about our anatomy: if our body [had] another physiognomy, would we look different to the world? why not have four ears? what would it be like to have four ears? could we listen differently or even more? why are our ears not positioned on our arms?
