ambiente 2017: british architect and designer nigel coates presents ‘heads up’, a collection of hand-blown crystal glasses for nude. constantly experimenting and questioning his field, coates links craftsmanship and contemporary culture in this sophisticated yet genuine set of drinking vessels. comprised of white wine, red wine, champagne, whiskey and water glasses, their design can be distinguished by a double curve on the bowl that plays with light. this detail gives the collection its name as it recalls the outline of a human face.

made for nude in turkey at the ‘sişecam group’ — one of the world’s top three home glassware manufacturers — the ‘heads up’ glass collection by nigel coates is confident and charming, yet highly usable. with extremely tactile features like a robust stem and a satisfying weight, the carefully hand blown set invites the users to hold it in their hand generating immediate pleasure. made with wine tasting in mind, the double curve of the bowl maximizes the red wine’s aeration while the bowl of the white wine glass is closed enough to encourage the appreciation of the bouquet.

the ‘heads up’ crystal glass collection was showcased at maison et objet 2017 and ambiente 2017 and is the result of ‘glass is tomorrow’ — a workshop inside the manufacture’s production facilities in turkey curated by lise coirier. the workshop aimed to push the boundaries of technique, process, material, and aesthetics while generating a higher appreciation of glass as a creative medium. during it, nigel coates explored the organic nature of glass, trying the two major methods of glassblowing: free-blowing and mold-blowing. for this collection in particular, the later one was employed.
