atelier yokyok + ulysse lacoste build 'paper dome' from newspapers in beirut

in beirut’s sanayeh garden, french firm atelier yokyok and sculptor ulysse lacoste have built a towering ‘paper dome’ that serves as a metaphor of everyday life in the city. the architectural object is made from layered sheets of newspaper, interlocking to create a series of ’tiles’ that form a fragile yet firm façade. the public installation spans 10 meters in diameter, forming a calm sheltered environment for visitors to the park and creating a welcoming, shaded retreat for locals and visitors alike.

the public art installation has been realized for the exhibition ‘art in motion’ — a platform for both lebanese and international creatives to engage with the public using art as a means to bridge socio-economic, cultural and geographic boundaries. in collaboration with art and architecture students from beirut, atelier yokyok and ulysse lacoste have conceived ‘paper dome’ as an extension of its surroundings and a meeting place for the community. elevated on one side, the object is lifted in the air and suspended from the surrounding trees by thin tethers. visitors are invited to step inside and lounge within the paper habitat, where sunlight subtly filters through the many newspaper clippings, forming an immersive canopy beneath which to rest.
