karl lagerfeld designs monochromatic lobbies for toronto's art shoppe lofts + condos

karl lagerfeld has designed two lobbies for a mixed-used development currently under construction in toronto, canada. the interior scheme reflects the german fashion designer’s distinct style with a bold, monochromatic vision that blends luxury and modernity. the project comprises a palette of mirror and glass, with oversized bookshelves that include publications curated by the designer himself. ‘gabrielle (coco) chanel always said, ‘I only make dresses I would wear.’ and I make only rooms where I would like to sleep,’ explains lagerfeld. ‘it’s as simple as that. when I do a thing like this I think, would you live there or not?’

new york-based creative agency leitzes & co facilitated the initial introduction to lagerfeld’s team, with the project lagerfeld’s first in canada. art shoppe lofts + condos is a mixed-used development covering a full city block in one of toronto’s busiest neighborhoods. the complex is located near the intersection of yonge and eglinton, where the city’s latest light rail line is currently under construction.

backed by capital developments and freed developments, the building itself has been designed by architectsAlliance. the project includes a 28-storey tower on the north side of the site, which steps down to a loft-style 12-storey podium to respect the more traditional scale of the buildings to the south. ‘we wanted to elevate design to a new level not yet seen in the country,’ says peter freed, president of freed developments. ‘the art shoppe lofts + condos will be a legacy project for toronto. bringing karl lagerfeld to canada for the first time is something we are incredibly proud of.’
