joliark realizes bold residential complex in stockholm, sweden

located in stockholm within green surroundings — right next to the husarviken river — the residential building designed by swedish architecture studio joliark offers sustainable and attractive housing to one of europe’s most extensive development areas. the project is part of a long-term plan to transform a former industrial land into a high-profile and eco-friendly neighborhood.

commissioned by byggnadsfirman viktor hanson, the residential block reflects a distinct style: from the beginning, joliark has approached the design by using as few materials as possible — in order to sculpt a bold and comprehensible language in the architecture of the building. indeed, large horizontal and vertical concrete elements highlight the general structural frame, which includes 30 apartments of various sizes — all facing the river with large glass openings. each unit size of the complex is assigned a floor: the smallest are situated at ground-level, large single-decks are above and duplexes at the very top.

this stacked row-house structure is also divided into two parts, where the in-between space acts as a common foyer — including indoor parking for bicycles and two elevators connecting all floors.

the characteristic roof is created by – conceptually – slicing and folding up the roof slab, creating triangular wing flaps that are facing the sun; panels placed on them catches the solar energy. the roof wings also function as natural distributors of light to the duplexes and serve as physical connectors to the private roof terraces — which provide spectacular views of the djurgården recreational area and archipelago.

complementary building parts such as canopies, stairs, railings and access balcony appear as an external web made out of galvanized steel. a shift from steel to concrete draws a border between the public and semi-private outdoor space. in addition, joliark included wooden window frames and greenery to soften the otherwise bare materials –characteristic of the building; the gables also hold nets for climbing plants and the roof is partly covered with succulents to delay rainwater
