studio frank havermans has built a temporary pavilion named ‘kapkar SF-P7S’, which has been designed to accommodate discussions, small scale exhibitions, and other cultural events. completed on a relatively low budget, the brief called for a striking piece of architecture, which could be easily dismantled and transported to future locations. naturally illuminated, the pavilion had to provide space for at least 50 people.

the project was designed by studio frank havermans for BOUWLAB, an event organized by stichting fabrikaat — a foundation who specialize in hosting temporary place-making projects. in summer 2016, a small settlement was erected along the nijmegen river bank on the north side of the city, which focused on demonstrating to the public alternative ways of living and building.

positioned on top of a newly constructed dike, the pavilion features a truss frame construction that references the gable roofs formerly used in the region’s farmhouses and sheds. ‘for me, wood frame constructions are one of the anchor points of the dutch agricultural landscape,’ says frank havermans. ‘in the interior, the trusses are folded open and become interior spaces and places to sit for three people.’

taking on a futuristic appearance in the landscape, the ‘front’ of the building is made from steel angels and corrugated steel sheets, which give access to the interior. the entire pavilion is built in segments and can easily be taken apart and replaced. ‘by charging this construction with several elements from classic farmhouse typology in combination with simple low budget materials I created an experimental hybrid construction that emphasizes the importance of farmhouses and sheds in our cultural landscape,’ explains frank havermans.
