architect show has completed a three-storey residential property in fukuoka city, japan, which has been elevated to allow for parked cars at street level. flanked by an area of parkland, the architecture of ‘Y9-house’ seeks to capture a sense of nature, bringing greenery inside the home. stairs lead from the ground floor to the level above, which contains the master bedroom as well as guest sleeping facilities. communal living accommodation is found at the uppermost storey.

architect show, a japanese practice led by masahiko sato, left the building’s concrete finish exposed at its lower levels, with the upper storey painted bright white. this elevated volume appears to float in mid-air, while offering view across the neighborhood through an elongated opening. behind the cantilevered façade, a terrace provides a place for outdoor recreation, complete with plants and native vegetation.

seemingly placed at random, narrow windows have been utilized to help prevent crime and shield the house’s occupants from prying eyes. internal living space can be divided with movable partitions, which separate the volume into smaller, more intimate rooms. timber is used throughout, providing a stark contrast to the building’s more austere concrete walls.
