trentino collaborates with max lamb at london design fair

trentino collaborations is an exciting new initiative connecting british designers with trentino-based manufacturers. these collaborations allow designers to use industrial and handcraft processes to create design-led, cutting edge works. the commissioned british designers include max lamb, sebastian cox, lucy kurrein and giles miller and the new pieces are being launched at the london design fair this september.

‘campione’ by max lamb for pedretti graniti

max lamb, in collaboration with pedretti graniti, has created a chair from a slab of tonalite rock. the chair showcases, or samples, pedretti graniti’s various techniques for working stone – it contains examples of saw cutting; edge profiling; chiselling; wedge splitting and CNC milling. the designer has called the chair ‘campione’ for its double meaning in italian: champion and sample.

‘trentino storage by sebastian cox for arte del legno

sebastian cox worked with custom furniture makers arte del legno on his piece, a cabinet called ‘trentino storage’. this is cox’s first production piece in larch softwood and it combines trentino hazel with trentino larch. the piece explores their heritage of basketry in the trentino region. ‘I wanted to capture the materials and craft of the region in a functional piece that was easy and low-impact to transport,’ said cox. ‘trentino storage is a modular and adaptable unit that features simple shelves and wall baskets for playful and functional storage.’

‘ronda collection’ by lucy kurrein for molinari 

lucy kurrein, together with molinari, has created punch-bag inspired leather sofa designs. the rondo armchair and sofa showcase the company’s leatherworking techniques. ‘the legs compress into the upholstery to emphasise the soft structure, inviting the user to wrap their arms around it as boxers do,” she said. “we have chosen the best quality, thick leather to echo the heavy-duty nature of the punchbag.’ – lucy kurrein

‘marquetry tiles’ by giles miller for euro perfidy

giles miller has developed two pieces for euro perfidy with natural stone. miller has created a marquetry system using porphyry rock tiles in contemporary patterns. the specific colour and composition can be tailored by the user. he has also created the ‘stipple screen’ which is made of a number of stone tiles stacked on wires, like a vertical abacus. ‘this is a significant project to launch in our tenth-year anniversary because its core – connecting designers with manufacturers – is something we’ve always done,’ said london design fair founder and director jimmy macdonald. ‘relationships are fundamental to us.’

trentino collaborations is part of the london design fair, which runs from 22 to 25 september 2016 at east london’s old truman brewery, during the london design festival. this year’s fair will feature 15 country pavilions, 250 independent designers and 200 global brands.
