japanese studio sides core has completed its design for a minimalistic, industrial-style hair salon focused on displaying the ideas and personalities of its staff. entitled ‘vinyl’s mix’, the name reflects the owner’s desire to create a hair salon that could integrate music, art and other forms of personal expression into its professional personality. to achieve this, the salon also plays home to a library whose collection is curated entirely by the staff.

the premises has a narrow façade flanked by utility meters

sides core’s industrial reboot makes for an eye-catching view from the street, as the façade of the salon is opened drastically by a set of sliding glass doors with large uninterrupted panes. inside, the studio retained the rough, solid cement of the original building throughout, coloring it only with a series of plywood walls and screens. these walls segment the space, creating the dedicated library room and a more secluded area for hair-washing.

existing pipes are taken advantage of and repurposed into clothing rails, while steel beams in the roof are used as a grid in which to suspend fluorescent lights. a plywood coffee table becomes the center of the waiting area, along with two geometric metal chairs and a spherical hanging lamp — the most flamboyant addition to the space. the redesigned interior finds balance by providing the salon with plenty of textured materials to harmonize with the existing rough, unfinished style of the space.
