fernando romero's 'border city' joins the USA and mexico boundaries

london design biennale: representing mexico’s interpretation of utopia at the inaugural london design biennale, fernando romero’s ‘border city’ is a vision for a binational city right on the country boundaries of the USA and mexico.  the project idea is entrenched in the history of places where frontiers join, cities where cultures entwine and clash. as a very topical subject, the ‘border city’ concept looks at providing an urban space where both mexico and USA inhabitants can flourish. this is through utilizing a perceived scale that is the most adequate in overcoming some of the most paramount issues that face our present world, such as; pollution, over-crowding and migration.

romero’s prototype encompasses a hexagonal plan in order to offer a versatile framework. the efficient use of land entwines with a vast yet multipurpose transportation system. with the aim of being used as a new model for cities whose populations grow, the ‘border city’ shows how urban areas can best expand from an existing center. in this model, this expansion is shown through how the communities of santa teresa, san jose and san jeronimo, have fused together as one.

on display from 7^th to 27^th september 2016, fernando romero’s design for mexico is currently at the 2016 london design biennale at somerset house.
