teamlab suspends forest of resonating lamps at maison et objet

for maison et objet 2016, japanese collective and interdisciplinary group teamlab has suspended an array of lamps that react to the people who move around them. known for their immersive installations, the creative team has achieved a mix between art and technology with this piece that reminds whoever is experimenting it of their own presence and of the ones surrounding them. called ‘forest of resonating lamps ’, the artwork is composed of thousands of lamps made of murano glass equipped with LEDs and sensors that come to life thanks to the radiant colors they emit.

with this year’s intervention, teamlab aims to materialize the concept of eternal through the use of lamps, lights, and mirrors. the interactiveness of the piece will always depend on people — meaning that the idea of randomness and infinity are always present. when a person remains still next to a lamp, the object will shine bright while emitting a color that resonates out. this first lamp becomes the starting point—spreading to the two nearest lamps—creating a light chain reaction.

if light comes from the other side of the room, it means that there is someone else standing there, and this way, people become aware of each other’s presence. the planar arrangement of the lamps is set as a zigzag that fills the space as part of a thought and orderly grid. this blend between the material and digital world immerses the visitor into an experience where changing lights illuminate a space that is bounded just by the floor and the mirrors used as walls.
