henning stummel architects has designed a home in suburban london that, despite being overlooked by surrounding properties, ensures privacy for its residents. set back from the street, ‘tin house’ is a composition of predominately single storey pavilions that each respond to the different conditions around the perimeter of the plot. these earth-colored volumes create an architectural ensemble that looks onto a secluded courtyard.

henning stummel’s design sees each pavilion accommodate a single room, with a roof that slopes on all four sides, maximizing the internal volume. a large skylight — partially referencing the work of james turrell — helps illuminate each volume, while offering privacy — both visually and acoustically. secondary spaces, such as bathrooms and staircases are hidden within the walls between pavilions, ensuring that the design reads as an enfilade of generously proportioned spaces.

each volume is finished in a standing seam metal cladding, a modest utilitarian finish designed to highlight the sculptural quality of the dwelling. the cladding uses greencoat PLX BT, a product that features a technology with a substantial portion of the traditional fossil part replaced by a bio-based alternative. this solution significantly reduces the building’s environmental footprint.

‘tin house’ has been shortlisted for the 2016 stephen lawrence prize, a RIBA award intended to encourage fresh architectural talent, and reward the best examples of projects that have a construction budget of less than £1 million. the winner of the prize will be announced alongside the RIBA stirling prize on october 6, 2016.
