studiobird sarcophagus australia designboom

studiobird has developed a futuristic ‘sarcophagus’ that alters its appearance in response to its environment. first presented on the edge of blairgowrie back beach, australia, the installation was occupied by performance artist lilian steiner, who was filmed inside the coffin entering a meditative state. the project has since been presented at the venice architecture biennale 2016, inviting audiences to experience an immersive environment of simulated sleep-states.

the multidimensional architectural installation was developed by studiobird to challenge the behavioural concerns surrounding the idea of a coffin-like space. a meditative enclosure was introduced, allowing participants to find comfort within an unconventional place of rest. the interior has been filled with abstract cinematic, sound and imagery, allowing one to lay still and enjoy a personal and perspective shaping experience.

the ‘sarcophagus’ is on display at the venice architecture biennale 2016 from may until november.
