henning larsen architects' danish pavilion opens on ipanema beach for rio 2016

rio olympics: copenhagen-based firm henning larsen has designed the danish pavilion located along the renowned ipanema beach in rio de janiero. first announced back in march, the composition represents denmark internally and externally. the structure features a lightweight construction composed of aluminum masts and covered in cloth used for sails.

named the ‘heart of denmark’, the design by henning larsen architects aims to strengthen denmark’s reputation worldwide. the structure from above is clearly draws influence from the country’s flag and at night, the whole pavilion is illuminated with red led lighting. in total, the scheme covers 3250 square feet and includes a bar, press room, and exhibition area. throughout the olympics, it will host a diverse number of activities and exhibitions centered on danish design, innovation, art, and culture and be a point of gathering for the danish athletes, representatives and audience.

the pavilion is based on the renowned ipenema beach

aluminum construction is by john mast, a producer of sailboat masts, while the whole design will be covered with sail cloth manufactured by onesails. ‘the pavilion’s simple and light expression is a reference to nordic architecture and to denmark’s maritime and sailing history,’ explain the architects. ‘the triangular shells of the pavilion also pay tribute to rio de janeiro’s hilly landscape, and are inspired by the brazilian architect oscar niemeyer’s iconic style.’

the enclosure is composed of four sections of metal profiles covered with a white canvas
