killwood launches bika bike-rack made with blighted canadian pine

measuring only five millimeters fully grown, don’t let the mountain pine beetle’s size misguide you. the small insect, native to western north and central america, has capitalized on the region’s warming climate — causing a blight of unprecedented proportion. in british columbia alone more than 18 million hectares (1.3 million football fields) of forest have been attacked, with current predictions estimating 57% devastation of B.C. pines by 2021.

vancouver-based design start-up killwood is making the best of the dismal situation. utilizing only affected trees — forest fire risk is greatly increased if left unharvested — the studio aims to bring contemporary products to market and draw attention to the growing environmental issue. ‘bika’ is killwood’s first offering, a modern wall-rack that accommodates a bike, keys, and other small items. killwood is currently seeking funds for ‘bika’ on kickstarter here
