new york’s landmarks preservation commission has approved herzog & de meuron’s plans to convert a trio of upper east side townhouses into a single dwelling for russian billionaire roman abramovich. the initial plans for the buildings, located at 11-15 east 75th street, were originally rejected by the city’s department of buildings. the redesign calls for a modified restoration of the current façades, and the removal of the rear yard building elements, which will be replaced with a new garden and a glazed elevation that spans the three structures.

6sqft confirmed the approval of herzog & de meuron’s design, which sees the swiss architects team up with architect of record stephen wang. sources stated that the commission welcomed the idea of the properties maintaining their individuality, with three door pediments enuring that the house appears as separate buildings. according to the same source, the main entrance will be at number 13, where a glazed door with mesh metal work is influenced by the scheme’s historic context. new york yimby reports that no. 11 will be restored, while an artist will be hired to design the door of no. 13. ‘it all sounds very easy, but it wasn’t,’ said architect jacques herzog on the verdict. a cast iron fence acts as a unifying element, oriented towards the passing street, while there will also be a rooftop addition.

roman abramovich is also the owner of chelsea football club, a premier league soccer team. in december last year, herzog & de meuron revealed plans for chelsea’s new 60,000-seat stadium. the design features 264 brick piers that support a steel ring above the pitch. see more on the plans here.
