ramon esteve estudio to renovate and overhaul hospital in barcelona

spanish practice ramon esteve estudio has won a competition to extend and renovate the hospital of viladecans in barcelona. their architectural design for the surgical hospital will call for the existing historical building to be adapted and connect with a new addition to form one single entity.

ramon esteve estudio will be collaborating with sulkin marchisio arquitectos to realize the 35,000 sqm project. the building will feature two longitudinal volumes which intersect, with three storeys supported by the base. inside it will host the wards and various care services and as the body is recessed from the street façade in order to lessen the dominance of the larger building opposite.

the older building will facilitate administrative and the care supporting services, with the new permeable complex formed by connecting the old with the new. a new main entrance serves also as a pedestrian internal link to the square that gives access to the former hospital. this former entrance square will be renewed as a pedestrianized space without flow of people or vehicles. furthermore, the new construction will be made of exposed concrete, that is integrated to the surroundings and the existing buildings. color will be introduced into the concrete, glass scheme in the lobby, bringing dynamism the contemporary and coherent design.
