alphons ter avest’s bakehouse uses its frame as fuel for the bread oven inside

‘bakehouse’ is an architectural installation by alphons ter avest which contains a bread oven within a decorative geometric structure. the project is part of the sonsbeek’16 transaction – an international sculpture exhibition hosted in arnhem, in the netherlands. bakers from from all over the world are encouraged to attend the event, to exchange ideas, recipes, and to bake until there is nothing left of the house.

the ‘bakehouse’ is built from ornamental patterns rooted in global religions including christian, jewish, islamic, hindu and buddhist culture. while firing the oven, planks are gradually taken out from different segments of the house and used to bake the bread. little by little the installation is deconstructed until all that remains is the stove itself.

civilians and locals can bring their doughs to the oven as well and have them baked by the bakers. alphons ter avest’s project invites cooks from different cultural backgrounds to take part in the event making it a participatory installation which brings the community as well as visitors from afar together to enjoy the food produced from the ‘bakehouse’.

the ‘bakehouse’ will take part in sonsbeek’16 exhibition from the 4th of june until the 18th of september 2016.
