SHoP architects to complete national veterans resource complex for syracuse university

syracuse university has selected SHoP architects to design the new ‘national veterans resource complex’ (NVRC) at the school’s upstate new york campus. the firm’s scheme was chosen after a six-month design competition, which included other established practices adjaye associates and snøhetta. seeking to enable and promote academic, government and community collaboration, the NVRC forms the home of the university’s institute for veterans and military families (IVMF), which has served more than 48,000 veterans and military families. the project will offer state-of-the-art vocational and educational programs designed to advance the economic success of its user.

SHoP’s design includes classroom spaces capable of accommodating both local and national veteran-focused programming. available for the whole campus, a conference center and a roughly 1,000-seat auditorium host community activities, lectures and national convening events and conferences. the facility is also expected to include gallery space. designed as a LEED-certified facility, the inclusive facility welcomes and accommodates veterans and visitors with disabilities.

the NVRC is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2019

the NVRC forms part of the central new york regional economic development council’s winning proposal titled ‘central new york: rising from the ground up’. the proposal was one of three selected to receive $500 million USD as part of govenor cuomo’s upstate revitalization initiative (URI). SHoP will now collaborate with university leaders to refine the initial design plans. tentatively planned for the western portion of the waverly block on the syracuse university campus, the NVRC is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2019. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here.
