atelier bow-wow + didier faustino’s wooden installations glow inside paris’ culture house of japan

atelier bow-wow + didier faustino have together created installations for the ‘magical house’, an exhibition held at the maison de la culture du japon in paris. proposed back in may, their dynamic pavilion-like structures explore the issue of the habitat, inventing innovative and often provocative ‘machinery / habitats’. the architects have both decided to craft their structures from wood and despite using the same material, the experience they present offer visitors two complementary visions.

for this collaboration, didier fiuza faustino has formed a polyhedron with rounded edges. closed on the outside by translucent walls, balancing on one of its sides, ‘the hermetically sealed structure is stripped, is fragile and unstable. its balance is jeopardized – a slight intervention that henceforth makes it uninhabitable. a home is not a hole becomes autonomous and de facto, sculptural.it is through a rejection of the act of using architecture that the issue of my intervention at the maison de la culture du japon à paris is determined. it no longer constitutes a destination for the body, but has its own destination, which is the landscape.’ explains faustino.

meanwhile the tokyo-based architects have crafted a pitched structure in which visitors can enter and take shelter, sit and socialize. an homage to japanese wood craft, the pavilion is both opaque and transparent, the form representing the slatted façades of traditional townhouses in japan. with both installations set within a dark room inside the japanese culture house of paris, they each conjure a play with light, shadow and sound to ultimately, instill a poetic and calming atmosphere.
