‘cities should be able to host from modern to archaic ways of living if they want to properly tackle the migration of people towards them.’ this is the statement made by rural urban framework, led by joshua bolchover and john lin and created in collaboration with the university of hong kong. set among the brickwork of the arsenale, ‘settling the nomads’ is one of the many exhibits presented at the venice architecture biennale and explores RUF’s work in mongolia. this has taken form as a series of mongolian yurts that retain their recognizable form but explored in different materials. the mini pavilion-like spaces invite visitors in where videos of are continuously played and at the same time, RUF’s notion of promoting quality in a rural context by connecting it with the development of skilled labor is conveyed.

this new aspect of the rural-urban transition in mongolia is based on the promised of better living conditions: ‘unlike in the cities, where industrial corporatism is an important global force, in the rural world the connection with local building traditions, crafts, and family businesses is more evident… our proposal explores the use of incremental architecture so as not to eradicate nomadic traditions, but channeling that energy into permanent houses instead.’ – rural urban framework
