furniture brand JCP, founded by architect livio ballabio, continues their unique fusion of art an design with two objects — previewed during MDW 2016 — by alessandro zambelli. a reflection on the concept of (im)materiality, the ‘ixorb’ sofa and ‘surande’ lamp/side table surpass function in search of the symbolic through subversion of physical substance.

‘ixorb’, an illusionist object and two-seat sofa

‘ixorb’ is a surreal two-seater sofa contained within an illusionary metal framework. as one looks upon it, the eyes attempt to make sense of its paradoxical construction. ‘surande’, similar only in peculiarity, is a hybrid combination of lamp and table. illuminated via reflected light, a pulley system is utilized to change lighting intensity.

to zambelli, the project for JCP was, ‘a journey to the edges of the discipline of design, a journey without rules or limits.’ challenged and empowered by unrestricted development, ‘ixorb’ and ‘surande’ are the exciting results of the italian designer’s striving for an original, unencumbered visual language.
