japanese architect kazuki moroe’s ‘house in toin’ establishes a dialogue between two contrasting forms. located adjacent to a forested shinto shrine, the residence is divided into four boxes to assume a scale smaller than the sacred place. a range of windows point views towards the wooded honden; the form and opening depending on the degree of privacy needed in the room. in addition to its direct relation to the shinto, each box has a pent roof that collectively harmonizes with mountains to the site’s northeast. visual continuity extends throughout the entire house, the kitchen acting as the center.
